Fellow pilots,

During the ALPA Canada Board meetings this week, we discussed many of the benefits available to our members. One of those benefits is the universal ALPA sponsored $20,000 Basic Life coverage. The coverage is there in the event of a death of a covered Canadian resident who is a member of ALPA, regardless of location or cause of death.

Less than 20% of our own members, have yet to designate a beneficiary.

Why is it important to nominate a beneficiary?

  • More money for the beneficiary(s) - Appointing a beneficiary (like your spouse or children) means the proceeds go directly to them rather than through your estate. If it goes through your estate, your family could receive less money.
  • It’s private - Unlike a will, which becomes public when it goes to probate, naming a beneficiary, means that only the person named needs to know the specifics.
  • No need for a lawyer and no delay or probate fees while your will is sorted out - Probate fees vary by province and can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, depending on the size of your account.

Furthermore, the ALPA Canada Insurance Trust Committee currently sponsors, Basic Life, Teladoc, Optional life, Critical Illness, Home and Auto insurance plans and the My Future marketplace for retirees.

Details of these plans are available on the ALPA Canada Insurance Webpage, which you can access by clicking here: ALPA Canada Insurance Webpage.

To make things easier, you can also use the electronic forms via the DocuSign program here: Access Electronic Designation of Beneficiary form.

Please note, your ALPA login credentials are needed to access DocuSign.

We also advise you take the time to check with our company benefit carrier to ensure you have designated a beneficiary for any possible life coverages and/or pension programs.

You can access and review your benefit options and contact information at any time through the mobile based BenefitSpot App.

If you haven’t already done so, please scan the QR code above. When you access the app, enter the company code ALPACAN (case sensitive).
